Banks and their bankers have had it tough lately… Well not really, but you get the idea.
To many, they are a scourge on society and the greatest manifestations of greed, recklessness, and selfish behaviour in the modern world.
Yet banks have advertising and marketing departments and it is within these divisions of the many global institutional behemoths, where Macbeth-like ‘spin’ spells of mind-boggling dizziness are regularly concocted.
Similar to how the cigarette industry for years blatantly denied and batted away arguments that smoking was harmful, banks persistently promote themselves as humane and leading centres of world-class excellence in empathy and kindness.
Yes, the majority of banks are not responsible for all of the world’s ills; including the drowning of kittens or knocking old lady walking sticks away, but the majority of the public see them as places generally devoid of morality.
However when adverts are released, such as the one below from Danish giant, Danske Bank, it makes one wonder how the spin doctors can do this and keep a straight face?
With a soundtrack from a London-based slick indie band, the XX, aesthetically the ad is undoubtedly pleasing to the ears and eyes. But it has no substance.
It is merely a series of humane clichés that Danske is seizing upon in order to ‘align’ itself with contemporary societal acceptance… austerity, disability, global warming, world energy, sexuality, globalisation and so on.
But does it tell us anything about the bank and its contribution to the world around it or the worlds of its customers? No.
