When the news broke late last year that AMP had become the first super fund to buy into cryptocurrency, it signalled that crypto had become a mainstream investment.

Research by CoreData found that 12 per cent of Australians own crypto, putting it on par with more established asset classes like ETFs, which are owned by 10 per cent of the population, and direct international shares (9 per cent), but the move of a big institutional buyer into the space was the ultimate marker of legitimacy.

“Cryptocurrency has moved from the fringes into the portfolios of everyday Australians,” says CoreData research consultant Anna Vennonen.
