Bad Times, Good Music

Published 27 January 2009

In times of crisis it can be argued that the human senses are heightened more than in times when the going is good.

We’ve all been there – a dangerous situation, a broken heart, a lost relative, a sporting loss or a trounced investment – all of which tend to sharpen the senses.

So it is with this notion that UK media network, Sky News, is suggesting one of the possible upsides to the bleak economic situation in 2009 will be an explosion of artistic creativity as musicians gorge on a bounty of negative creative fuel of the times.

As evidence the network draws on the burst of quality music created in the late 70s and early 80s – a time when people in the UK were struggling significantly with the economic conditions of the day.

With an estimated 85,000 reported jobs losses (45,000 in the US) being reported in the press today alone (January 27th) we could be seeing a deluge of top class music hitting the airwaves sooner rather than later if the Sky report is to be believed.

Although, if things get too bleak, problems may arise for the artists producing the acclaimed songs in that whether people will be able to afford to buy the CD’s when they hit the shops.

Late last night Australian financial group MLC reported a round of job cuts, so for those still at MLC and other groups times are certainly shaky right now.

Let’s hope, as UB40 so eloquently put it referring to those made unemployed, that we won’t be the ‘one in 10’.
